Liebe Studierende,
habt ihr Lust, ein Nachhaltigkeits-Projekt von Grund auf zu entwickeln und eure Fähigkeiten auf einer internationalen Bühne zu präsentieren?
Im Rahmen des Wettbewerb iGEM (international Genetically Engineered Machine) wollen wir genau das machen.
Nach spannenden Monaten der interdisziplinären Projektarbeit treffen sich im November hunderte Teams aus aller Welt in Paris zum iGEM Grand Jamboree. Die TU Darmstadt schickt schon seit Jahre erfolgreich Teams ins Rennen und jetzt stellen wir das Team für 2026 auf. Dafür suchen wir motivierte Studierende.
Dieses Jahr wollen wir uns um die Probleme beim Recycling von Textilabfällen kümmern. Unser Planet ertrinkt in dem Abfall, den die Menschheit produziert. Besonders die Menge an Textilabfällen steigt stetig aufgrund von Fast-Fashion-Unternehmen. Nur ein kleiner Prozentsatz der Textilien wird recycelt, die meisten landen auf Deponien und verschmutzen so die Umwelt. Das Hauptproblem beim Recycling ist die Mischung verschiedener Fasern die schwer zu trennen sind.
Der Kern unseres Projekts wird es sein, Mikroorganismen in einem Bioreaktor einzusetzen, um aus gemischten Textilabfällen ein verwertbares Produkt herzustellen. Gemeinsam werden wir unser Endprodukt bestimmen. Von Biokraftstoffen über Kunststoffe bis hin zu Medikamenten, vieles ist möglich und jede Idee ist denkbar.

Dort werdet ihr erfahren, was die Teilnehmenden während der Projektarbeit erwartet, wie das Team zusammengestellt wird und wie viel Spaß ein interdisziplinäres Studienprojekt machen kann. Außerdem habt ihr die Gelegenheit ehemaligen Teilnehmer:innen Fragen zu stellen und für kleine Snacks ist auch gesorgt.

Dear Students,
Would you like to develop a project from scratch that aims at making the world more sustainable, and showcase your abilities on an international stage?
That's exactly what we want to do in the framework of the iGEM competition. After months of working on the project, hundreds of teams from around the world meet in Paris for the iGEM Grand Jamboree in November. The TU Darmstadt has successfully sent teams on this journey for many years and now we are assembling the team for 2026. For this we are looking for motivated students.
This year we want to address the challenges in recycling of textiles. Our planet is drowning in the waste humanity produces. Especially the amount of textile waste is rising due to fast fashion companies. Only a small percentage of textiles get recycled, most end up on landfills and pollute the environment. The main problem is to separate the mixture of cotton and plastic fibers in the garments.
The core of our project will be to use microorganisms that live in a bioreactor to produce a valuable substance from mixed textile waste. Together we will decide on our final product. From biofuels over bioplastics to pharmaceuticals, there are many possibilities and every idea is welcome.
We invite you to join us if you are interested in one or more of the following topics:

At the session, you will learn what participants can expect during the project work, how the team will be organized, and how much fun an interdisciplinary project can be. You will also have the chance to ask former team members any questions and snacks will be provided.
