Bachelor/Master Thesis: Automated creation of value stream maps based on textual descriptions by using prompt engineering

  • The CiP group at PTW is focused on research related to lean manufacturing. An important tool for this are the so-called value stream maps. Typically, these are generated in writing or with computer programs. In this work, the new developments in the field of artificial intelligence will be used to generate these value stream maps automatically based on written explanations of the processes. For this purpose, we are looking for a thesis student who is interested in the field of prompt engineering and wants to develop a software pipeline to create value stream maps based on textual descriptions.

The thesis includes the following work packages:

•Research on prompt engineering for language models on the example of ChatGPT

•Definition of a standard for the storage of value stream maps in graph format with nodes and edges

•Using prompt engineering to generate value stream maps based on textual process descriptions with the ChatGPT-API

•Evaluation of the results through user tests

    •Documentation of the results

    What we expect:

•Motivation to familiarize yourself with new topics

    •Programming experience

•First experiences with value stream maps

    What we offer:

•Intensive support through regular milestone meetings

•Possible scientific publication depending on the thesis results
